Symptoms of Long Covid

These are the most common complaints:

  • Fatigue, low energy, feeling exhausted, desire to lie in bed all day;
  • Shortness of breath, difficulty in maintaining normal activities;
  • Brain fog, a problem with thinking, the feeling of a foggy mind;
  • Loss of smell and taste, a sense of listlessness;
  • Sensitivity to light and sound, feeling easily irritated.

If you have one or more of these symptoms after being infected with COVID-19, there is a chance that you have Long Covid. In our consultations, we can help determine this.

Important to know: there is no definitive list of Long Covid symptoms. Also, it is not necessary to have a minimum number of symptoms. There are too many differences between patients.

What is Long Covid?

The period after acute COVID-19 has two phases.

  1. In the first two weeks after the infection, the body needs to recover, and after the first two months, everything should be functioning normally.
  2. After two months of persistent symptoms, the Long Covid phase is reached. Spontaneous recovery is still possible at this stage, but less certain, and that’s when we start treatment.
We start treatment from the second phase because we know we need to learn more about the virus and the disease. Then, with our knowledge, we can begin treatment earlier in the condition. This way, we can provide good medicine with scientific knowledge.

Is Long Covid a unique syndrome?

Long Covid is one of the post-infection syndromes. We see similar conditions as Long Covid after many infections.

Examples include post-infection syndromes after Epstein-Barr virus (mononucleosis), West Nile virus, Ross River virus,

Chikungunya, Zika virus (dengue fever), Coxiella Burnetii (Q fever), Borrelia (Lyme disease), Legionella, and many others.

Most of the symptoms overlap, but there are also specific abnormalities that help with the diagnosis.

For Long Covid, for example, the olfactory disturbance is one such abnormality.

Is Long Covid treatable?

If we start the proper treatment on time, it is possible to prevent permanent damage. Have you been infected more than two months ago and still have symptoms? Treatment is possible, but it does require time.

Why choose the Long Covid Clinic at the CFS/ME Medical Center?

We were among the first centers to offer effective drug treatments for people with ME/CFS. This disease overlaps with Long COVID – more than 80% of ME/CFS patients contracted the condition due to a virus. Long Covid is not a new disease, but a new form in which the body has adapted after a viral infection.

  1. With over 30 years of experience, we have learned much about how the body adapts after a viral infection.
  2. We have an extensive international network of scientists and health professionals, ensuring we are informed about the latest insights in treatment methods.
  3. We were involved in drafting the consensus documents from the United States and Europe for ME/CFS, so we are familiar with the problems arising from a condition post-viral infection.

We have also published on multiple aspects of the disease and treated thousands of people in the 30 years our center has existed. As one of the few centers in the Netherlands that specializes in scientific research into systemic diseases like Long Covid, we know there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer for treatment.

What can we offer?

By placing our patients at the center, we ensure you receive a treatment path tailored to your situation. This means that we don’t have a mold you need to fit into but a set of criteria that we continuously monitor with you. This way, you remain in control of your body and the pace at which you go through the process and set the boundaries yourself.

What are the costs?

The center does not make a profit.

The first part of the examination lasts a month. During this month, you will have contact with us at least four times, and tests will be conducted. The month concludes with a discussion with the doctor about the results of the examinations. Both you and the general practitioner receive a written report with a plan for further analysis and a treatment plan.

Over the next six months, which methods improve your condition and reduce your complaints and symptoms will be examined. During this period, you will have contact with the assistant every three weeks. Tests are repeated as often as necessary.

The diagnosis with tests, questionnaires, measurements of causes, and six months of treatment: € 950.

How does it work?
