Long Covid Treatment

What is Long Covid?

We differentiate between insufficient recovery from tissue damage caused by the SARS-COV-2 virus, with possible consequences from a stay in intensive care, and the non-occurrence of full recovery without demonstrable harm.

For instance, shortness of breath can be explained by damage to the lung tissue with limited ability to recover. The loss of smell and taste often recovers, but energy production doesn’t always.

Long COVID can also occur after mild symptoms during infection. Research shows that the virus may still be present. Other studies find that a second infection or medications might cause Long COVID, and autoimmune processes may play a role. Some studies point to possible nerve tissue damage in some cases.

Adaptations in processes, such as hormone and energy production, cause these functional disorders. As a result, you may find yourself unable to climb stairs, because there isn’t enough energy being produced.

All processes in the body need to be precisely coordinated. With Long COVID, this often becomes a problem. This can result in blood circulation not responding properly when sitting or standing, leading to dizziness and brain fog.

What can we offer for Long COVID treatment?

Before treating your medical problem with medications and other means, we investigate your history and progression. If there are any indications and it hasn’t been done yet, we ensure a measurement of lung function, heart function and exercise capacity, as detailed as necessary. Together, we determine what’s needed and achievable. A cycling ergometer test is often strenuous but not always the proper test for PASC and Long COVID.

We’ve established above that cycling and talking don’t cure Long COVID. But what can help?

Knowledge is starting to emerge about the processes causing the symptoms. We have means that are believed to influence these underlying processes. Our knowledge has been gained from over 30 years of research and treatment of patients with ME/CFS.

A lack of energy, as seen with Long COVID, is caused by an issue in energy production. In medical terms: “a mitochondrial dysfunction. We’re aware of several causes we can identify and treat. For ME/CFS, the grounds have been mapped out, but for Long COVID, it requires further attention. Treatment is possible for most causes of reduced energy production.

Dizziness when sitting or standing is 99% caused by a non-optimal adjustment of blood circulation. We call this Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), and it’s treatable.

Long Covid Treatment path

Registration

You can register for our consultation and treatment via phone or email. We also have the option to provide more explanation about our consultation and treatment in a (video) conversation.

Investigation

The investigation consists of 4 consultations, or more if there’s a reason. Research has shown that after Covid-19, people can shed viruses for a prolonged period. For this reason, and because traveling can be taxing, consultations are conducted via video connection.

Consultation 1

This initial conversation is conducted via video.

In this conversation, we aim to get an understanding of your medical history as well as your current living conditions.

You will speak with Ineke Vermeulen. She has a paramedical education and has been involved with the Center for 30 years.

In this conversation, which typically lasts 1 hour, we begin with the time before the acute infection, as there often are indications for the emergence of diseases that resemble PASC and Long Covid.

Your chronic illness not only affects you but also the people around you. Due to unfamiliarity with the disease, those around you often struggle to understand your symptoms and limitations. We will discuss these issues with you, which will be addressed in the subsequent consultation.

Consultation 2

We have a wide range of methods to determine the severity of your limitations and their causes so we can treat you effectively. Our choice is based on the data from the questionnaires and the information from the first consultation.

For this consultation, you will receive a package at home containing the equipment we need for measurements.

This 2nd conversation with Corine Reurts, the assistant, is conducted via video call. She will guide you through the tests.

We have several tests to measure limitations characteristic of PASC and Long Covid, and we continue to expand our range of tests.

During the consultation, you will take a test to measure your thinking and reaction speed.

Consultation 3

The 3rd consultation also takes place via video.

You will speak with Ruud Vermeulen, an ME specialist, about the medical aspects of your illness and any other issues. He has access to the information from the previous consultations and will decide based on that if further tests are needed. For instance, further examination of the lungs or heart might be necessary if there are indications of functional disorders.
Any specialized examinations based on his advice will take place in your region.

The conversation usually lasts about 45 minutes.

This is a part of the diagnostic process, so that you won’t receive a report of the results in this consultation.

Consultation 4

This conversation again takes place via video call.

You will speak with Ruud Vermeulen about the preliminary results of the investigation. We will create a report, which will be sent to your general practitioner and you will receive a copy.

You will discuss whether further tests are required or if the treatment can begin.

This consultation lasts 45 minutes.

Treatment of Long Covid

Marten Otten oversees the treatment. He is an experienced general physician. Under his guidance, the staff collaborates daily with you towards your recovery. Contacts are made via phone or video. We routinely reach out at least every three weeks, or more frequently if necessary, and are always available.

Of course, your general practitioner is kept informed of the developments, and in consultation with your GP, we refer to specialists in your region if further examination is necessary.

Multidisciplinary

Paramedical support through psychotherapy, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy undoubtedly benefits some patients. We can arrange video chats with your care providers, whom you feel should be involved, ensuring a consistent treatment plan. This establishes a multidisciplinary team of caregivers in your region, tailored to your needs.
We offer a free video information consultation for anyone wanting to learn more about us and our treatment. There’s a one-time fee for the research. You can read more about this on our detailed information page.
